As Winter rolls into Spring, and second semester sports are well under way, it is important to shed light on the importance of the Eagles fanbase. Made up of devoted parents, siblings,
teachers, and community members, the Eagles faithful have stuck by the athletics at El Segundo for as long as it has been around. The players and coaches rule the fields, courts, and pools, but the supporters rule the stands, and are a major reason why athletes at El Segundo High School take so much pride in their occupation.
However, there can never be too many fans, and as such, it is important that new parents,
students, and others know how to fan properly. Because when an athlete looks up into the stands, and sees a roaring ocean of patrons and supporters, they are filled with the motivation to move mountains.
Starting at home, where the fun begins in football season, and carries into the spring with
track and field, all played at Hazeltine. Named after Harvey Hazeltine, the first ever athletics
coach at El Segundo High School, the infamous stadium is home to Eagle’s football, soccer,
lacrosse and track. Its grandstands, which are watched over by the bright blue announcing booth, hold more than 1000 people.
For all the new fans of El Segundo sports, coming out to a football game under the lights can be the perfect introduction to Eagles athletics. Our football program, which has improved
massively over the past few years, is set to have a stellar season next year. But if America’s pride and joy isn’t your jam, come out to support boys and girls soccer as they advance into their CIF playoff runs this February.
Just around the corner from Hazeltine is the second sports arena on campus, our South Gym. Home to volleyball and basketball, the south gym holds an atmosphere like no other. The walls are lined with the banners of all league-winning campaigns, and for the special Eagle squads that capture CIF gold, a massive yellow banner over the home sides’ stands. For you fans, be ready to be loud, as the Eagle faithful like to roar!
Next we go across town to the border of El Segundo and Hawthorne, to the El Segundo
Aquatic Center. The aquatic center is the newest addition to the athletic arena lineup at El
Segundo, and holds all of the water sports the Eagles play (apart from surfing). Water Polo and
swim teams all practice and play at the aquatic center. This fall, boys water polo, a program at El Segundo that has soared in the past couple of years, put together an amazing campaign, making it all the way to the CIF quarterfinals.
The remaining spring sports in El Segundo are all spread out across the city and beyond, as baseball/softball, golf, and beach volleyball are scattered around the community. Baseball and softball both call Rec Park home, as Stevenson and its sister field to the south host the Eagles. Make sure to bring an empty stomach, as the snack bar is always a hit with the fans.
Eagles golf calls Westchester Golf Course home, and looks to three-peat undefeated seasons this upcoming spring. The final destination for Eagles sports is as far west as you can go, to the beach at El Porto. Beach volleyball and surf both call the sand and waves home. One of the most beautiful settings in all of sports, watching volleyball with an ocean background, doesn’t get much better than that.
Now that you are familiar with the places to be for Eagles athletics, you are ready to be a
proper El Segundo fan! Come out for the remainder of the winter season, and the start of the
spring season to support your Eagles athletes, and make sure to don your BLUE and GOLD!
